INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Department of Public Works is preparing to tackle the first major winter weather event of the year.

According to a press release, Indy DPW said it will dispatch more than 80 crew members to pre-test roads, bridges and overpasses within Marion County, ahead of a snow event that is expected to impact central Indiana Thursday evening.

This means that crews will work rotating 12-hour shifts, Indy DPW wrote. Up to an inch of snow is expected, as well as potential freezing overnight.

“Our crews are prepared to address the weather expected to impact our community this week and will continue to monitor and respond to any changes in the forecast” said Indy DPW Interim Director Sam Beres.

Beres added that Hoosiers should provide space on the roads, so that snowplow drivers and salt truck drivers can safely conduct their work.

Indy DPW said it is also preparing for winter weather that may extend into the weekend and beyond. Per multiple weather models, a strong winter system will affect several midwestern states, including Indiana.

While Indy DPW admitted it is too early to determine the exact amount of snowfall or driving conditions that are expected Sunday morning through Monday morning, they wrote that they are already preparing their crews for the possibility of severe travel and weather conditions.

Additionally, Indy DPW reminded drivers to practice the following safety tips:

  • Stay informed: Be sure to tune in to local weather reports and keep an eye out for hazardous conditions that could affect your commute.
  • Time and space: Give yourself even more time to reach your destination than you would previously. Watch out for pedestrians, follow the speed limit and ensure that you are providing Indy DPW crew members with enough space to conduct their work.
  • Pack extra resources: Indy DPW said items such as water, blankets, device chargers, extra clothes and salt will come in handy, should they be necessary.
