INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana is on the campaign trail for presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris and Republican Vice Presidential nominee JD Vance.
Harris will be in Indianapolis, and Vance will be in Fort Wayne to share their message with voters.
Harris’ visit was planned before President Joe Biden announced he was not seeking re-election.
She’s scheduled to speak at a Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. event at the Indiana Convention Center.
Over 6,000 members from across the globe will be in the Circle City and will hear from Vice President and presumed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
“I’m here in Indy getting ready for everybody and my phone starts going crazy, one of my staff members started screaming, and I’m like what happened? And she said, did you see the news?” said Dr. Stacie NC Grant, international president and CEO of the organization.
Repping blue and white, the convention center was full of women reconnecting with one another for the first day of the conference.
They are expecting an even busier day to follow on Wednesday.
“To have the honor of being visited by the sitting Vice President of the United States is a great honor for our organization. It is a first and we are thrilled,” said Grant.
Harris is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and frequently works hand in hand with Zeta.
“It’s very exciting and even more exciting now that she may be the nominee,” said Brooke Burke, president of her Alabama chapter. “It’s pretty exciting, so we’re looking forward to that for sure.”
Harris was asked to be a special guest several months ago following Zeta Day on the
Hill, where their members go to D.C. and speak with elected officials.
She was unable to make it then, but committed to coming to the conference, even following the recent announcements.
“We were in shock, we said what does this mean? And then the Secret Service started calling, then the White House started calling, and I said, Oh this is getting real in Indianapolis,’” said Grant.
Organizers said they don’t want to influence their members’ votes but want them to make educated choices on who they will be supporting going into this November election.
All eyes will be on Indianapolis as Harris is in the opening days of her presidential campaign.
