INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales briefed the Indiana Executive Council on Cybersecurity (IECC) on the state’s security and safety plan for the 2024 election on Friday.
According to a press release, Morales emphasized that Indiana is committed to “safeguarding election infrastructure against evolving cyber threats.”
Morales also reported that his office is collaborating with multiple state and federal agencies — including the Department of Homeland Security and FBI — ahead of this year’s election. The state’s election officials have also participated in cybersecurity training that is designed to help them recognize and mitigate potential threats.
Additionally, the Hoosier State has upgraded its equipment for this year’s election. All of Indiana’s voting machines are now equipped with features that create a paper trail for the state’s votes.
Morales reported that a paper trail is necessary for auditing purposes. County officials have already completed public tests of the equipment to ensure it works as intended.
State, local and federal election threat monitoring teams have also been assembled and will be activated through Election Day and beyond, according to Morales.
Indiana has also set up a text line Hoosiers can use to report suspicious election activity to the Secretary of State’s office. Morales indicated Hoosiers can text “IN” to 45994 to make a report.
Morales also emphasized that Hoosiers can report suspicious activity to their local election authorities.
“Security and safety are top priorities as we approach Election Day,” Morales said via press release. “We owe it to every Hoosier voter to protect the integrity of their vote. The Indiana Executive Council on Cybersecurity, in partnership with state and local election officials, has championed robust security and coordination measures to ensure that our elections remain safe, secure, and reliable.”
