INDIANAPOLIS — A 17-year-old was arrested by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department after he reportedly shot and killed a dog on the near northeast side of Indianapolis.

According to a post by the department on its social media, the nuisance and abatement unit (NAU) was contacted by the Indianapolis Animal Care Services after a dog was reportedly shot and killed in the 3700 block of Hillside Ave. on Jan. 23.

In its investigation, detectives learned that a juvenile, later identified as the 17-year-old, reportedly shot the dog in the middle of the day. The post read that the dog did not belong to the teen and the dog was not reportedly “displaying any aggressive behavior at the time of the shooting.”

A deputy with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office was nearby when the shooting occurred. The post read that the deputy spoke with the teen, who reportedly gave a false name at the time. The deputy also spoke with neighbors regarding the shooting.

After IMPD took over the investigation, detectives identified the teen with help from community members, available surveillance footage and the department’s Real Time Crime Center.

On Tuesday, NAU detectives, along with investigators from the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force, reportedly located the teen in the 3600 block of Baltimore Avenue. The post read that when the teen was detained, officers saw that he had a stolen handgun with a large capacity magazine in his pocket, the weapon that detectives believe was used in the shooting.

The 17-year-old was arrested on the following preliminary charges:

  • Dangerous possession of a firearm
  • Criminal recklessness
  • Torture or mutilation of a domestic animal; Killing a domestic animal
  • False identity statement

The post read that the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision in this case.
