INDIANAPOLIS — Two apartment complexes on the city’s east side had a heavy police presence Wednesday night as the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department investigated an officer-involved shooting and searched for two suspects who ran from police.

Just before 7:30 p.m., IMPD officers with the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force were at Briergate Apartments as part of a firearms investigation.

According to IMPD Captain Don Weilhammer, investigators had information that a car they were looking for and those inside it were involved in several disturbances and shots fired at that apartment complex.

Officers observed the vehicle, followed it and then attempted to do a traffic stop. That led to a pursuit that ended at Cheswick Village Apartments in the 2900 block of Carnaby Street.

IMPD said three suspects bailed from a red Chevrolet Malibu and took off running. While chasing the suspects an officer fired their weapon. No officers were injured and IMPD said there was no indication that the suspects or anyone else was hit.

One man was taken into custody, but investigators are still actively looking for two other suspects in connection with the incident. Officers also confiscated two guns that were near the man taken into custody.

“This is another example of what the department has been saying for numerous months now, that we are focused on gun crimes,” said Weilhammer. “And this is an example of our officers proactively going out, trying to get guns off the street.”

“However, I can’t stress enough we need the community’s help to get these guns off the street.”

Anyone who may have information about the incident Wednesday night is asked to call IMPD Detective Brian Lambert at (317) 327-3475. That information can also be given anonymously by call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS.

The public has been asked to avoid the area of Cheswick Village and Briergate Apartments at this time.

Both of those complexes are off of Carnaby Street near the intersection with East 30th Street.

IMPD does believe that the suspects are still in that area.

All officers involved in the incident were wearing bodycams at the time. IMPD said that the Critical Response Team responded to the scene to conduct an investigation.

The officer who fire their weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending investigation. IMPD said that IMPD Internal Affairs will conduct an independent internal investigation.

This is a developing story and will be updated once more information is available.
