INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department public safety officer has adopted a dog he rescued from a hot car.
According to a post on Facebook, an IMPD public safety officer first found the dog trapped inside a vehicle in 90-degree heat. The officer reported that the vehicle’s windows were barely cracked and that its air conditioning was not on.
Per IMPD, two dogs and a cat were stuck inside the car. Police indicated that one of the dogs died before officers could get to it.
After the animals were removed from the vehicle, one of the officers that responded to the scene reached out to Indianapolis Animal Care Services (IACS) to see if he could adopt the German Shephard police rescued.
The officer was ultimately able to adopt the resilient dog, Abby, and give her a forever home.

In its Facebook post, IMPD reminded Indianapolis residents about a city ordinance that prohibits pet owners from leaving animals in cars when it’s hotter than 90 degrees outside. The rule also applies when heat advisories are in effect.
