INDIANAPOLIS — Parents are breathing a sigh of relief after a car theft briefly led to a frantic hunt for a missing child in Indianapolis.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, a vehicle was stolen near the intersection of W. 12th Street and N. Tibbs Road at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Police said an infant was in a car seat inside the vehicle at the time of the theft.

IMPD officers jumped into action and immediately began canvassing the area for the stolen vehicle and using license plate readers in an attempt to track down the vehicle and find the young child.

Police said not long after the auto theft, dispatch received a call about a child left in a car seat with no parents in sight in the 200 block of N. Somerset Avenue.

Police arrived on scene and found the infant in the car seat. The child was checked out by medics and returned to its parents.

Police said the investigation into the missing vehicle continues.
