INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis metro police are investigating after a man was killed and a woman was critically injured in a shooting at an apartment complex on the city’s east side Monday night.
Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched around 6:24 p.m. to the 4400 block of E. Washington Street, the listed address for Colonial Apartments, in response to a shots fired run.
IMPD said officers arrived on the scene and were flagged by a witness who told them that a man and woman had been shot inside an apartment. The officers subsequently entered the apartment and found a man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds.
The man was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in “extremely” critical condition where he later died, according to IMPD. The woman was also brought to Eskenazi Hospital where she remains in critical condition.
IMPD Capt. Don Weilhammer said preliminary information indicates some type of verbal disagreement occurred inside the apartment that led to shots being fired. It remains unclear if the male and female victims fired shots at each other or if they were wounded by someone else during the altercation.
As of this article’s publication, police have three “persons of interest” in custody as they continue investigating the circumstances that led to Monday’s fatal shooting. Police are not looking for any additional suspects.
Detectives believe the incident was isolated and the rest of the neighborhood is now safe.
“It’s almost like a broken record when I talk about it because it seems like every time we’re saying this but it still has not changed. People need to learn to talk things out,” Weilhammer said. “I’m not able to work everything out with everyone that I talk to so it’s better to turn and walk away and revisit it another day. It’s not worth resorting to violence in any manner, especially on guns.”
Anyone with information should call IMPD at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS (8477).
