SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — An ice house has fallen through the ice on Big Stone Lake near Rustling Elms Resort.

According to a post on Facebook, the Big Stone County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call at approximately 11:32 am on Thursday regarding a vehicle falling through the ice on Big Stone Lake.

Upon arrival, it was found that a 2024 CAN-AM Defender occupied by three adult males had been attempting to cross a heave when it broke the ice. The three occupants were able to evacuate the ATV before it was fully submerged.

The CAN-AM was pulling a permanent ice house which had also become submerged.

The occupants were wet and very cold but were able to flee to a nearby residence.

The ATV and ice house removal is expected to take a few days.

The Sheriffs Office would like to remind everyone that no ice is ever 100% safe and avoid crossing heaves.
