A Connecticut father was the one who found his three young children dead inside their home earlier this week, all of whom authorities believe were strangled to death by their mother who then seemingly died by suicide.
Pedro Panjon discovered his kids’ bodies inside their Danbury residence on Whaley Street Wednesday and then immediately walked back outside, where he phoned 911. A neighbor, Sandra Viganor, told Fox 61 the grieving parent was distraught and weeping during the phone call. He’d also been unable to locate his wife, Sonja Loja, at the time.
When authorities arrived on the scene around 6:30 p.m., they found 36-year-old Loja hanging in a shed in the backyard. Her cause of “death is asphyxia by hanging” while the children “appear to have died by strangulation,” according to authorities. They were identified Thursday as Junior Panjon, 12, Joselyn Panjon, 10, and Jonael Panjon, 5.
“Pending an official autopsy, preliminary findings indicate that Ms. Loja strangled her three children before killing herself. However, this is still an active investigation,” police said in a news release.
Few other details have been provided, but authorities believe it was an isolated incident and that there is no additional risk to the Danbury community, located about 50 miles northeast of New York City.
Viganor said that Loja used to babysit children at her home during the week, but was recently shut down by a state agency for not having license to run a daycare. It’s unclear whether that triggered her brutal killing spree.
“It feels bad because you know the kids were really good kids,” another neighbor Ralph Braugher told Fox61. “They were really friendly kids. You know when you would drive by they would wave ‘Hey! How are you doing?’”
Danbury Mayor Dean Esposito said in a release that the city and its school system plan to provide mental health and counseling services to children impacted by the deadly violence. Two out of the three young victims were students in Danbury Public Schools.
“A truly horrible event occurred in our city yesterday, and we mourn the tragic loss of life,” Esposito said.
“Our community grieves for the innocent lives taken from us. We will get through this together”.
