JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. — Officials with the Johnson County Coroner’s Office recently announced that human remains found in 1993 in Greenwood have been identified.

According to a news release, the remains were identified as Michael Benjamin Davis, a South Carolina resident who was in his mid-20s at the time of his death. While the case has long been suspected as a homicide, the cause and manner of death have been ruled undetermined.

The remains were originally found in 1993 near I-65 in Greenwood on what is now the Otte Golf Course. The release said that “significant process was made” in identifying the remains in partnership with the Greenwood Police Department, the University of Indianapolis and the Othram Forensic DNA Testing Laboratory.

“This case remained cold with no leads until our Coroner’s Office revisited it using updated DNA and genealogy procedures,” the release said. “After months of emails, phone calls, and assistance from other law enforcement agencies across the U.S. and Canada, we were able to locate potential family members.”

The release said that this was Johnson County’s only known unidentified set of remains.
