HULL, I.A. (KELO) — A Hull, Iowa man was arrested after a pursuit by police and attempted assault with a knife.

Isidro Encarnacion, age 44 of Hull, Iowa was arrested on July 6 at 10:10 p.m. The arrest stemmed from an earlier report of an attempted vehicle theft that occurred at a residence where Encarnacion threatened family members with a large knife.

Upon arrival, officers observed Encarnacion driving a vehicle that was detailed as stolen in the 911 call.

Encarnacion fled in the vehicle despite officer’s commands to place his hands in the air after first brandishing the knife he had threatened the family members with.

Officers pursued, initiating a chase that lasted approximately nine miles. During the chance, Encarnacion lost control of the vehicle and struck a culvert, disabling the vehicle. The crash caused over $10,000 in damage to both the vehicle and the culvert.

After exiting the vehicle, Encarnacion ignored officers’ commands to place his hands in the air again and advanced aggressively with the knife. Law enforcement successfully subdued him by using a taser and the Sheldon Police Department K9 unit.

Encarnacion reportedly smelled strongly of alcohol and admitted to drinking before and during the pursuit.

Encarnacion was transported to Orange City Area Health for treatment of minor injuries. Upon release from medical care, he was transported to the Sioux County Jail where he was charged with Operating a motor vehicle While Under the Influence (3rd offense), First-degree theft, Domestic Abuse, Child Endangerment, Interference with Official Acts (Dangerous Weapon), Criminal Mischief and Felony Eluding.
