SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Sioux Falls is now home to nearly 220,000 people.
Last year, Sioux Falls added close to 5,700 residents, according to a city estimate.
On the development side, the city saw some ups and downs in building permit numbers.
From big ticket projects like the Sioux Falls One Stop to smaller construction like housing, the City of Sioux Falls issued nearly 6,200 building permits in 2024.
While permits were down compared to 2023, construction valuations surpassed a billion dollars for the fourth year in a row.
“I really believe this is kind of going to be our new standard, our new benchmark being above a billion dollars,” Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken said.
The city saw increases in home and townhome permits compared to 2023, but multifamily such as apartments were down.
“And if you were to look back over a 20 year time period, what you would see is almost a predictable trend of peaks and valleys where there’s a lot of apartment construction. It takes a while for those apartments to get filled up, so they’re reaching capacity and then there’s more reinvestment in apartments,” Sioux Falls Assistant Director of Planning and Development Services Kevin Smith said.
Smith says generally speaking it was a good year for Sioux Falls.
“It was another billion dollars in growth and development,” Smith said.
“The big theme for us is to continue to keep our community investable through the policies, through the planning, through the rates we’re charging for utilities so our residents can get in housing and multi-family as affordable as possible and that people can stay in their homes as long as possible as well,” TenHaken said.
