SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Faith Temple Food Giveaway at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds won’t happen this Friday because of the Sioux Empire Fair.
There was no Friday giveaway last week either because of the event.
Karna Herr uses the Faith Temple Food Giveaway almost every Friday.
Over 1,200 cars typically show up to the event where people can get food like eggs and produce.
“I’m retired, living on a limited income, so I run short of groceries sometimes, so it really helps,” Herr said.
On Wednesday, Herr joined a line of people outside Faith Temple Church for a flash giveaway.
“The dollar doesn’t go as far as it does in the past, so I think it’s just evident seeing the line of folks here that hunger is relevant. Our neighbors in our community are living in hunger and whatever we’re able to do to address that, we want to do,” Faith Temple Food Giveaway Assistant Director of Operations Josh Hayes said.
While it was a scaled-down giveaway, the crowd picked up items like bread and pop.
“We really have this product graciously available, so we want to get that to people who can use it versus it being thrown away,” Hayes said.
This flash giveaway is just one of the ways organizers try to curb hunger, in addition to the Friday giveaway.
“We also issue emergency deliveries to people who are in emergent need of food via Door Dash,” Hayes said.
The church also keeps food available in the lobby during business hours.
The normal food giveaway picks back up on August 16th.
And Herr will be there.
“Very grateful,” Herr said.
There was also no Friday giveaway in late July because of an event on the fairgrounds.
