Highland Park suspect to appear in court for arraignment

Robert Crimo III, the suspected shooter in the July 4 massacre in Highland Park, Ill., is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday for his arraignment.

The 21-year-old Crimo was indicted last week on 117 counts, including 21 counts of first-degree murder, in connection with the shooting at an Independence Day parade that left seven people dead and dozens more wounded.

The other charges against Crimo include 48 counts of attempted murder, and 48 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm.

The arraignment hearing is scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. local time at the Lake County court in Waukegan, Ill., according to Chicago news station WLS.

Prosecutors said last month that Crimo confessed to the shooting, and say he used a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 rifle.

The suspect drove to Madison, Wisc., after the massacre in Highland Park and considered carrying out a shooting there, but decided against it and returned to Illinois, where he was arrested, Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman Christopher Covelli claimed last month.

Crimo was charged with three different types of first-degree murder charges for each of the seven victims killed in the shooting.

He faces up to life imprisonment if he’s convicted of the murder charges.
