DANVILLE, Ind. — The Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of multiple telephone scams, following an increased number of reports.
According to a press release from the HCSO, scammers will make calls and attempt to deceive people into paying substantial amounts of money. Sometimes, they will even pose as HCSO employees.
Per the HCSO, some of these common scams include telling locals they missed jury duty, have an outstanding warrant or are facing a legal issue that needs to be addressed immediately.
Over text, scammers will also fraudulently tell people they must provide payment for unpaid tolls.
The HCSO said these calls will threaten residents with arrest unless they pay quickly, typically doing so using “Green Dot” cards.
“The Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office will never call residents to demand payment or threaten arrest for unpaid fines, warrants or missed court dates,” the HCSO wrote. They added that if someone is requesting payment via gift cards, wire transfers or payment apps, they are most likely a scammer.
“To lessen the chances of becoming a victim, always verify the authenticity of any call, and don’t hesitate to reach out to your local police department to report suspicious activity,” said Hendricks County Sheriff Jack Sadler.
“I encourage everyone to remain vigilant and protect their personal information as well as educate family and friends about these scams, which target individuals from all walks of life and age groups,” Sadler continued.
