TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. — A person was arrested on Friday after they led a trooper from the Indiana State Police on a chase through Lafayette….all while driving a hearse.

According to ISP, a trooper was patrolling the area of Sagamore Parkway near Kossuth Street around 10 p.m. when he spotted a hearse flashing red and white lights heading northbound in the southbound lanes of Sagamore Parkway.

ISP said that hearse crossed back into the northbound lanes before it reached South Street. Nonetheless, its driver disregarded a red light and kept driving northbound. An ISP trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, but it disregarded him and kept traveling north on Sagamore Parkway.

The chase, having started in Lafayette, then headed into West Lafayette. Per ISP, the hearse driver turned onto Sachem Boulevard before stopping at the intersection of Sachem Boulevard and Sachem Court.

Police added that the driver initially ignored troopers’ verbal commands but was still safely transported into custody.

The driver was preliminarily charged with the following:

  • Resisting law enforcement with a vehicle (Level 6 Felony)
  • Resisting law enforcement (Class A Misdemeanor)
  • Lend/permit use of a driver’s license (Class C Misdemeanor)

In compliance with Nexstar Media policy, FOX59/CBS4 will not be naming the suspect as they are not accused of committing any violent crimes. Should the charges be upgraded, this story will be updated to reflect that.
