The Hattiesburg Zoo announced the death of its Sumatran tiger, Kipling, Wednesday morning.
The zoo took delivery of Kipling in 2018 from the Dallas Zoo, where he was part of a breeding program designed to sustain the species.
The Hattiesburg Zoo’s statement on the death of its Sumatran Tiger
“It is with great sadness that the Hattiesburg Zoo announces the passing of its Sumatran Tiger, Kipling, this morning. For some time, his primary keepers, the veterinary staff and the animal management team have worked hard to address and improve his age-related health problems, including digestion and mobility. Unfortunately, Kipling continued to decline and exhibited behaviors indicating he was nearing the end of his life. Though recognized as inevitable, the zoo staff grieves for today’s loss of such a rare and beautiful animal.
Kipling has brought joy and amazement to those who have visited him at the Hattiesburg Zoo, and has helped educate and bring awareness to the natural habitats and conservation needs for these beautiful creatures.
Kipling was a tiger with a unique personality. He loved chewing bamboo, swimming in his pool, spooking his keepers with random vocalizations, and walking away in the middle of training sessions. He was loved by all and will forever be remembered in our hearts. His name will live on in Kip’s Cub Club, one of the Zoo’s Annual Pass levels.”
