SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Catholics around the world have a new Pope and Catholics in Sioux Falls also have a new leader…at least for now.
Bishop Donald Kettler is now the temporary administrator of the Diocese of Sioux Falls while Bishop Donald DeGrood undergoes treatment for some health concerns. Kettler says being back in Saint Joseph’s Cathedral feels like coming home.
“I’m a north-ender from here. So I grew up four blocks from here,” Kettler said. “So this is my home, my closer home is right here within the neighborhood, So, I’m just happy to be back.”
Kettler served with the Diocese of Sioux Falls from 1987 to 2002 before becoming a bishop in Alaska and later a bishop in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
“I hope I can be of some help around from having been experienced as both a priest and a bishop for awhile,” Kettler said. “And I always am happy with the warmness of the people here.”
His return to the Diocese of Sioux Falls came at a whirlwind time as Catholics around the world awaited a new pope.
“I was meeting with the staff for the first time and here they are hearing that there’s a new pope. So, it’s interesting,” Kettler said. “It’s the way church works, the way God works.”
We also spoke with Kettler about his thoughts on Pope Leo XIV’s appointment, which you can read by clicking here.
