The Phoenix Elementary School District has taken action to terminate the lease with ASU Preparatory School. This has prompted Representative Matt Gress to send a letter to Superintendent Deborah Gonzalez requesting reconsideration of this action.
“A basic review of this public school shows a campus that is thriving, efficiently operated, and properly utilized,” noted Gress.
Gress pointed out that in the past, this school district has spent months in public comment regarding the closure of schools that the district operates. By contrast this action was taken without a comparable process.
Rep. Gress also made a very significant announcement in this letter, writing, “I have initiated a policy discussion with the Governor’s Office on establishing a mandatory 90-day comment period before a lease termination or non-renewal notice for an active public school operator.”
If Gress’ policy is implemented, parents and other interested parties will be guaranteed the opportunity to have their wishes and concerns addressed before action is taken.
