MANILA, Philippines—Gilas Pilipinas coach Tim Cone made sure to call out the doubters who criticized Scottie Thompson’s national team inclusion.

Cone fired back at the naysayers on the heels of Thompson’s stellar outing that helped Gilas beat powerhouse New Zealand, 93-89, in the second window of the 2025 Fiba Asia Cup Qualifiers on Thursday night at Mall of Asia Arena.

“I remember when there was a time when people were saying that Scottie can’t play in the international games,” said Cone.

“A lot of people were saying that because ‘he can’t shoot’ but in my mind there’s never been any doubt and in his mind, there’s also never been any doubt.”

Thompson showed why he’s vital to Gilas’ success, collecting 12 points, four rebounds and six assists in his return to national team duty after missing the Olympic Qualifying Tournament due to a back injury.

More than Thompson’s numbers, Cone was also impressed with the playmaker’s effort on both ends that didn’t end up on the stat sheet.

“His defense is spot-on, his hustle is also spot-on and he’s really, really worked hard on improving his shot and he’s not a guy you can just step off of anymore,” said Cone, who guided the Nationals to a 3-0 record in the continental qualifiers.

Thompson’s all-around performance also didn’t come as a surprise to Cone.

“He’s been that triple-double machine ever since he was in Perpetual so to me, it’s not a surprise. However, just because it’s not a surprise doesn’t make it amazing. The things he does are still amazing.”

Cone looks to steer Gilas to another victory at home against Hong Kong on Sunday at the same venue.
