Georgia State University Economics Department Among Top 50 in the World, Best in Georgia

Dr. Glen Ross, economist

ATLANTA—A new report on economics departments ranks Georgia State University’s Department of Economics among the top 50 in the world for the impact of its published research. It is also the top-ranked department among Georgia’s public and private universities, only two of which were ranked.

National Bureau of Economics Research (NBER) Working Paper 29768, forthcoming in the American Economic Association’s AEA Papers and Proceedings, examined the statistical uncertainty in economics journal and university rankings, then constructed confidence sets to counter the uncertainty.

Georgia State’s rankings neighbors — in terms of impact — include the London School of Economics, Cambridge and Oxford. Georgia State was ranked No. 46.

“Our Economics Department continues to be recognized for its strength, which is amplified by our unique department/center research collaboration model,” said Dean Sally Wallace of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, in which the department sits. “It is interesting to note who is not in the rankings, including several universities against which we are sometimes contrasted.”

Upon learning about the rankings, Georgia State University President M. Brian Blake commended the department. “This is such wonderful news. Economics is such a point of pride for Georgia State,” Blake said. “Thank you for your collective leadership.”
