Artist Brant Georgia based his Pileated Woodpeckers oil painting on his experiences watching a nest in the red pine forests of his home state of Michigan. Georgia, a Cornell University undergraduate (College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Class of 2026), says he draws inspiration from classic ornithological illustrators such as Alexander Wilson, Elizabeth Gould, and Louis Agassiz Fuertes, and he infuses elements from Art Deco and modern art—stark lines, congruent shapes, and geometric elements—to highlight the patterns and order of the natural world.
