TEA, S.D. (KELO) — For anybody looking for a new do, Tea has a new barber and braider in town.
Portia Palmer and Hernando Uribe have both been doing hair for a few years. The engaged couple moved here together from Oklahoma.
“We just wanted a better life for our kids. And my sister in law, she’s a police officer in Sioux Falls,” barber Uribe said. “And she told us about Tea and Harrisburg, in the little small community, in really great schools and for the kids just to be kids.”
The two met when they were both correctional officers, however, hair was calling their names.
“I was trying to get into a field that didn’t require like, so much time taken away from my kids,” braider Palmer said. “And I knew I love to do hair. So I went to cosmetology school and then when I went into the office, they were like, well, if you know anybody that wants to be a barber. And I’m like, Well, actually I do.”
Uribe is a certified barber.
“I cut straight hair, textured hair, tapers, beard. I got a certification just for beard itself,” Uribe said.
Palmer is a certified cosmetologist who specializes in braiding.
“Knotless braids, boho braids. I do men’s design braids. I really love to do those. And then I also just started getting into bubble braids,” Palmer said.
This dynamic duo is bringing confidence to others one head of hair at a time.
“It’s really important because that’s, you know, somebody’s first impression of you when they see you, you know, your nice, cleaned up, you know, it makes you feel good. Like for men, I would say is like the makeup for the females,” Uribe said.
“You can express your true self through your clothes and through your makeup and stuff like that. But I feel like hair is like a big way to be able to express who you are and the things you like, colors you like, styles you like,” Palmer said.
