About Fruit Lassi

Come summers, and the classic Punjabi beverage lassi is one of the most common choices invariably. The popularity of this drink is not just limited to Punjab and North India, but across the length and breadth of the country.

Different households have their own variations. This Fruit Lassi is one of my ways of making this creamy and delicious drink. Some more varieties that I have tried include:

In this recipe of Fruit Lassi, I have only used mangoes and bananas as that is what I had at the time I first tried it.

Other fruits like peaches, apples, berries, chickoo and figs can also be included. However, better to not use any citrus fruits or melons as they are not friendly to curd (yogurt) as per Ayurveda. Ripe sweet mangoes and curd on the other hand, is a compatible combination.

For making this Fruit Lassi or any lassi, it is always a good practice to use fresh curd (yogurt). Homemade Curd is a preferred option.

I make curd every day at home and in the summer heat, it even sets quickly. And with that, I make lassi or raita or Kadhi and even Curd Rice. Raita goes along very well with our usual sabzi, dal and roti meals.

Along with the added flavorings like rose water and cardamom, adding nuts, dry fruits is also a nice idea.

More so, if you want to turn this Fruit Lassi, healthier and with an extra layer of texture added to it. So, consider adding almonds, cashews, pistachios, etc. in this recipe.

Serve the Fruit Lassi Immediately. Ice cubes or saffron strands or even mint leaves are also some garnish options that can be added while serving this drink.

Step-by-Step Guide

How to make Fruit Lassi

1. Take 1 cup chopped mangoes and 2 medium or 3 small or 1 large banana, chopped in a blender. Also, add seeds of 4 to 5 green cardamoms, 1 tablespoon rose water (optional) and ½ cup milk.

Instead of milk, opt to use water.

2. Blend the ingredients till smooth.

3. Then, add 4 to 5 tablespoons sugar or honey, ½ cup milk (or swap with water) and 2 cups curd (yogurt). You can also add ice cubes at this step.

This recipe makes a thick lassi. For a thin lassi, you can add more milk.

Addition of sugar or honey depends on the sweetness in the fruits. So, you can add accordingly.

For a diabetic friendly lassi, skip the sugar and use no-fat skimmed milk and no-fat or low-fat curd.

As I have mentioned above, you can also use water instead of milk.
