TEA, S.D. (KELO) — A Sioux Falls food truck took it upon themselves to do something for those impacted by the devastating flood.

As many areas in KELOLAND got flooded, Sioux Falls was not hit nearly as bad as others.

“I live here in Sioux Falls, so you know, we had a little bit of water damage in our basement and it’s nothing compared to losing a house,” owner Anthony Axtell said.

Anthony Axtell knew he wanted to lend a hand and help the flood victims, but he didn’t know for sure what he wanted to do.

“We wanted to do something for them. We didn’t really, you know, I have a skill set of I do cook, I cook well,” Axtell said. “We want to make sure that we can do as much as we can to give back and try to give them a little bit of a normal lifestyle,” Axtell said.

After going down to Rock Valley, Iowa the food truck not only filled the people stomachs it also raised the spirits.

“Lots of hugs were shared. A lot of tears were cried, a lot of tears. People just generally appreciative of everything that was going on. So, it was they said it was truly a very humbling thing,” Axtell said.

Axtell is also a first responder in Sioux Falls, so he knows a bit about how natural disasters like this can take a toll.

“I’ve seen how tragedy truly affects people. And I just want to get back. We do a lot of charitable donations with our companies as it is, and so we just want to give back as much as we possibly can, because at the end of the day, that’s really all we can do,” Axtell said.

Big Poppa’s Food truck wants to help flood victims by providing them with a meal.

“We’ve gotten the cost down to like $2.50 a meal. So every dollar truly helps feed someone. So we really push that. Anybody that can help, it’s great just that we’re stronger as a larger community,” Axtell said.

The food truck will be in Canton on July 1 at the Methodist Church and on July 8 it will be at McCook Lake at the Izaak Walton League. If you would like to volunteer or donate click here.
