Sturgis, S.D. (KELO) — South Dakota’s Attorney General is looking after his hometown during the 84th annual Sturgis motorcycle Rally.
With thousands of riders rolling through town, Jackley and local law enforcement aim to keep crime down.
Enforcing laws and keeping people safe is a 24/7 priority during events like the annual motorcycle Rally.
“We’re being proactive by having uniformed officers on the streets. We’re proactive with joint operations with Federal, State, and local. Protecting children from human trafficking. We’re also very active with our drug task forces, making sure we’re keeping those dangerous drugs off the street,” Attorney General Marty Jackley said.
Currently, a major issue is the increased usage of Fentanyl coming in from out-of-state.
The Attorney General gives credit to all the organizations and law enforcement backgrounds that come together to work as one when these massive influx of individuals come into these areas like Sturgis during the motorcycle rally, to help mitigate crime.
Felony drug arrests are around the same number as they were last year, with 116 compared to 119 last rally.
The issue of human trafficking increases during these events as well.
“There’s a presence of individuals that are looking to potentially hurt children. So law enforcement takes a very proactive approach, where through our joint task forces run by Federal, State, and local officials we’re out there protecting kids, making sure we’re having proactive operations to make sure that kids aren’t being harmed,” Jackley said.
Law Enforcement is increased throughout the Black hills around the Sturgis Rally, with extra officers coming from other communities and even out of state.
