We’re getting closer to Thanksgiving, which kicks the holiday season into high gear. In this week’s Flashback Friday, I’ll take you back to Sioux Falls’ First holiday parade in 1984.
What’s this? Christmas in November? Well not exactly what happened. Today was the holiday spirit took to the streets thanks to many Sioux Falls businesses and service organizations their floats and costumes delighting thousands of onlookers.
“I like to stand in the street and look at the people all dressed up.” “I’m very impressed the floats are really, they’re really nice .”
The Sioux Falls Chamber of commerce says the event is modeled after New York’s Macy Thanksgiving Parade and St. Paul’s winter carnival parade.
The idea is to show that Sioux Falls is the place to be for the holidays.
Whether its Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years a majority of the floats display Christmas themes but that doesn’t necessarily mean South Dakotans are prepared for the upcoming yuletide season.
Perry: “Is your family ready for the holidays?”
“No, No we got too much shopping left to do.”
Ready or not, the holiday season is here and this first annual parade definitely got people into the spirit all that was missing was the white stuff.
But mother nature certainly wasn’t going to let it snow on their parade.
