FISHERS, Ind. — Republic Services may soon be the only trash collecting service in town after the City of Fishers recommended granting the company a 10-year exclusive, city-wide contract.
Currently, Republic provides nearly 60% of Fishers residents with trash, recycling and leaf collection services with Waste Management as the second largest trash collector in town.
Ray’s Trash Service also used to service the City of Fishers until the company was bought out and absorbed into Waste Management in 2022. Since the acquisition, Waste Management has racked up numerous complaints about being stretched too thin and missing trash and recycling pickups.
In May, FOX59/CBS4 spoke with several frustrated Waste Management customers in Fishers about ongoing trash pickup delays.
In the wake of these complaints, the City of Fishers began to explore bidding out a contract for a city-wide trash provider and giving one company the run of the city.
At the last Board of Public Works meeting, the City of Fishers recommended issuing this first every city-wide contract to Republic Services.
“Republic has decades of experience serving Fishers, which will help to ensure a streamlined and efficient transition. Their reputation, competitive pricing, and unique features make them the best fit for our community,” said Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness.
According to the Fishers, Republic was one of three bids received by trash collecting services. Republic reportedly offered “the lowest monthly rates for residents in the first three years.”
Fishers said the proposed monthly cost per household in 2025 would be $16.39. The City of Fishers stated this cost would be lower than what 85% of residents currently pay for trash collecting services, according to a survey conducted by the city.
A public hearing will be held on the contract proposal by the Board of Public Works on Aug. 13 with a final recommendation presented to the City Council this fall.
The 10-year contract would go into effect in January 2025.
