SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Rapid City Police Department (RCPD) received multiple reports of gunshots overnight, with most instances turning out to be fireworks from those celebrating the new year.

While investigations into each incident mostly turned up no evidence of gunshots, this was not the case for two calls.

Each came in on the morning of January 1, the first around 1:50 a.m. Police were in the 300 block of Curtis Street when they heard gunfire and traced the shots to the area of Haines Avenue and Van Buren Street.

Police say they spoke with a witness who said two men fired pistols before walking away down Van Buren. Police say they recovered multiple shell casings and found damage to a tire of a vehicle parked on the street.

The second incident was at 3:30 a.m. when police were dispatched to the business at 1624 Haines Avenue for a report of gunshots.

Police say they made contact with the reporting party, who was driving on Haines near Van Buren St. when they saw two men cross the road then turn and fire several shots toward the vehicle before running east on Van Buren.

Nobody in the vehicle was hit, though the vehicle itself was damaged. The witnesses described the suspects as “short juvenile Native American males, one wearing a black sweater and dark pants, the other wearing a grey sweater.”

RCPD is investigating the shootings and are asking residents of the area to review any camera footage they have and to report it to the RCPD.
