RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO) — Cities across KELOLAND are getting their 4th of July celebrations ready to go.

Rapid City has been doing its celebration in the middle of the city for years now, and the show continues to grow.

By day, it’s a golf course. But by tomorrow night, the sky above Executive Golf Course will be the home of Rapid City’s annual fireworks show.

“So there’s over 900 shells that are going to go up in the air. Over a 20 minute span, choreographed to music. Everything from your standard colors and what nots, to hearts, I believe there’s a few smiley faces and there’s a couple other cool surprises in there too. I don’t want to spoil everything,” Lead Technician Mike Sellner said.

The city offers several parking areas so you can get the best view of the fireworks show.

“Everything from our founders park area, our Monument parking lot area. If you’re heading to the municipal band concert in the band shell at 8 O’Clock, people just like to turn their lounge chairs around and catch the display,” Communications Coordinator Darrell Shoemaker said.

These shows are more than just lighting fireworks. Preparing the routine takes time and people to make it happen.

“But even with the right song, listening to the whole thing can sometimes get boring. So where’s the snip of certain songs to pull and where to do the special effects to get the ooo’s and the ahh’s. Because at the end of the day, that’s what we’re looking for, the ooo’s and the ahh’s and the claps at the end,” Sellner said.

“So we have a lot of different viewing areas. A lot of great opportunities to catch the fireworks display after a great day of events and activities in the Rapid City Black Hills area,” Shoemaker said.

The Rapid City fireworks show will begin Thursday night around 9:30 PM.
