SOUTH DAKOTA (KELO) — Good morning KELOLAND! Areas of fog have formed once again in parts of KELOLAND, but the hazy sunshine will be common in all parts of the region this afternoon.
Hot temperatures were felt yesterday in western SD, with highs of 102 recorded in Rapid City and 104 in Buffalo.
Our hourly planner today in Sioux Falls shows the hotter weather this afternoon, with highs near 88 today.
A Red Flag Warning has been posted today for the areas shaded in pink on the map below. Extreme fire danger in a concern in these areas due to the strong south winds, low humidity, and highs over 100 degrees.

The fire threat in western SD will be aided by the lack of humidity in the air in western SD.
Also, smoke and haze will continue to be part of the forecast. The animation below is a look at the smoke plumes across the northern plains the next 24 to 48 hours.
Futurecast shows the heat building in western SD, with several locations around 105 this afternoon. Our eastern counties will not be nearly as hot today, but that heat will slowly expand eastward into the weekend. Rain chances look low for now. Any high-based thunderstorm activity in western SD will only bring scattered rain at best.
We do see some scattered thunderstorm potential this weekend. The best chance of rain would be Sunday, but temperatures should remain above normal even with the scattered rain chances.
Temperatures are likely to remain hot at times well into the first week of August.
