SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A nursery hog barn was destroyed in a Friday, June 20, fire south of Jasper, Minnesota, said Jasper Fire Chief Chris Johnson.

The barn was empty and it had just been power washed to be ready for a new batch of pigs, Johnson said. It is believed the power washer equipment started the fire which was reported at about 4:15 p.m.

The barn could hold about 2,400 pigs, he said.

The barn was on an acreage about four miles south of Jasper and about 1/4 mile east of Minnesota Highway 23 in Rock County.

Wind speeds were high in the area on Friday. “Actually, the wind was in our favor, it kept the smoke out of our faces,” Johnson said.

The barn was not near any buildings on the acreage, he said.

Fire departments from multiple cities responded to the incident.
