EMERY, S.D. (KELO) — Three area electric companies have come together to help a Bridgewater-Emery High School student with special needs learn more about one of his passions.
They are helping Braxton Burnham finish out his senior year not with a bang, but with a spark.
Braxton has a love for electricity, so he was thrilled to see the special presentation.
Jordan: Are you excited?
“Yeah,” Braxton said.
Jordan: How excited are you?
“So excited,” Braxton said.
“It’s always been about electricity. He just has this interest, and he’s constantly talking about movies and things that I’m not aware of. He’s just talking, talking, talking and has all this information,” Braxton’s special education teacher Nicole VanLear said.
The demonstration, which was also open to Bridgewater-Emery sixth through twelfth graders, is part of Braxton’s senior project.
“His mom came to me wondering, ‘What are we going to do?’ So, he did some little projects at home, hands on experiences, but we wanted it to come more to life for him,” VanLeur said.
Terry Ebright of Sioux Valley Energy led the presentation. He says he’s glad he could help Braxton with his project, but it was also knew he needed to teach him and the other students some important lessons.
“To educate the other students that are coming through on the dangers of electricity, what to do if they’re involved in an accident or if there’s a line down due to weather,” Ebright said.
As Braxton finishes out his senior year, VanLeur is thankful she found another way to help him learn.
“It’s so exciting. He loves to learn. He wants to learn all the time, and just to see him excel, do well and be part of this whole experience, it’s amazing,” VanLear said.
And Braxton’s love for electricity will continue.
“It’s so awesome,” Braxton said.
Central Electric and Southeastern Electric also helped out with the demonstration Monday.
