SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Holiday relief is available on Saturday morning in both western and eastern South Dakota.
“We have fifteen hundred meals at both the Rapid City site and Sioux Falls site, so hopefully that will be enough to get around to all of the families that are in need, and if not, there’s a lot of other community partners that we can work with,” Feeding South Dakota CEO Lori Dykstra said.
Feeding South Dakota’s giveaways for Thanksgiving will both start at 8 a.m. local time at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds in Sioux Falls and the Central States Fairgrounds in Rapid City on Saturday.
“Tomorrow, we’re going to have those traditional Thanksgiving meal items like a turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, potatoes, apples, pie, pumpkin pie, which is great, gallon of milk for families,” Dykstra said Friday. “The idea is that it would be able to provide a Thanksgiving meal for a family of four-plus.”
And as Megan Kjose, Feeding South Dakota’s chief development officer, says, there is a real need for these giveaways.
“When we think about 105, 106,000 South Dakotans who don’t know where a meal will come next or how nutritious food will make it onto their family’s table, I think that number is really staggering,” Kjose said.
Attendees at the giveaways won’t be able to pick up a meal for another family; the meal has to be for their own.
