BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) — You may not have to board a rocket ship to learn about life in space.

The Children’s Museum of South Dakota has a new out-of-this-world exhibit.

6-year-old Peter Farmen visited the Lunar Life exhibit on Thursday.

What are you wearing right now?
Farmen: Space clothes.

The exhibit showcases the life of an astronaut.

Farmen’s favorite feature is the microscope.

“This is some kind of spider,” Farmen said.

“They really get the feel of what it is like to be on the moon. They can put on the outfits, they can put on the helmets, they can explore constellations. They can learn how to exercise and eat. About the only thing we don’t do in there is really float,” Children’s Museum of South Dakota Director of Marketing Kerrie Vilhauer said.

SDSU faculty and students designed the exhibit.

“Their majors were early childhood education, interior design, mechanical engineering, entrepreneurial studies, advertising and marketing,” SDSU Early Childhood Education Professor Kay Cutler said.

“We’re really excited to partner up with South Dakota State University in helping to bring space to life for young people, infants all the way up to adults to be honest,” Vilhauer said.

Farmen doesn’t plan on becoming an astronaut someoday.

“Because I’d have to eat gross food,” Farmen said.

But it’s still fun to imagine the possibilities.

The exhibit was funded through a grant from the South Dakota Space Grant Consortium.
