Few rivalries matched the intensity that the Avalanche and Red Wings had in the late 1990s. And that story will soon be shared in an upcoming documentary from ESPN.
Sportscaster John Buccigross shared ESPN E60’s trailer for “Unrivaled” on Twitter on Friday. The two-hour documentary focuses on the Colorado-Detroit feud and features interviews from several of the players and coaches from the era.
Here’s the worldwide, clean, Digital debut of @espn’s @E60 masterpiece, “Unrivaled.” @Avalanche/@DetroitRedWings was the @ufc on ice. The trailer opens with a past interview with former Colorado right wing Claude Lemieux, who started the rivalry during the 1996 Stanley Cup Playoffs when he hit Detroit’s Kris Draper from behind, breaking the Red Wings forward’s orbital, cheek and jaw bones.
Former Avs players Adam Foote, Peter Forsberg, Joe Sakic, Mike Ricci and Patrick Roy are featured, as well as Red Wings’ Kris Draper, Vladimir Konstantinov, Darren McCarty, Brendan Shanahan, Mike Vernon and Steve Yzerman. Colorado coach Marc Crawford and Detroit coach Scotty Bowman are also in the documentary.
