SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO)– A vote to expand the Mitchell Ambulance Service to residents of Davison and Hanson county has passed.

According to the Hanson County website the unofficial results of the Davison-Hanson ambulance district election:

Yes – 1841
No – 99

This vote comes after the announcement that coverage would be changing as the city of Mitchell said that effective January 1, 2026, they would no longer provide EMS outside of city limits, unless there is a way to fund six more employees to help cover those services.

The two counties will now create an ambulance district. There will be a second election on June 17 to elect the members of the ambulance board. The board will then decide whether to fund the $700,000 through either a property tax levy or a special assessment. The money would cover the new employee’s payroll, benefits, gear and training.

The new employees would allow the service to run an additional ambulance for the district.

Dan Pollreisz, Chief of Fire & EMS services for the city of Mitchell, said Mitchell is a town of 15,500 people, and their ambulance currently serves another 8,000 people outside of town.

According to Hanson County’s website, in 2024, there were a total of 208 emergency calls outside Mitchell, with Davison County reporting 125 calls and Hanson reporting 83 calls.

This is a developing story.
