Elgin Community College student-athletes cited for classroom success
Three dozen Elgin Community College student-athletes earned Academic All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference honors for the 2023-24 academic year.
Students with a 3.0 or higher grade point average were eligible to receive the recognition, according to a news release. Academic All-Conference first-year recipients must have at least 24 credit hours and Dick Durrant second-year honorees must have 48 or more credits.
First-year honorees were: Jack Kerno, Sean Riordan and Noah Schlup (baseball); Zoie Adamzon and Sydney Haughs (softball); Meek Ater, Gavin Khounnoraj and Isaiah Smith (men’s basketball); Hannah Mustard and Izzy Vidallo (women’s basketball); Jon Cunniffe and Jake Russell (golf); Oscar Jumenez, Diogo Magana and Luis Rubio (men’s soccer); Matthew Crumlett and Nathan Lieu (men’s tennis); Gabrielle Czeremuga, Nicole Nosbisch and Amelia Stoner (women’s tennis); and Lilithe Buttron, Alexis Macalindong, and Rachel Mikosz (volleyball).
Second-year honorees were: Quinn Butera, Ryan Caccia, John Genz, Josh Collins, Josh Genz, Charlie Jury, Jack Keck, Daniele Kinney and Andrew Sloan (baseball); Tevor Brook (golf); Ruben Guadalajara (men’s soccer); John Eugenio (men’s tennis); Jadyn Booz-Bruce (volleyball); and Sarah Duque (women’s basketball).
$3.9M in pool maintenance, repairs planned for two U-46 high schools
School District U-46 plans to spend $3.9 million on maintenance and repair projects for the pools at Elgin and South Elgin high schools in advance of a new swim class being offered at all five district high schools this fall.
A new liner will be added to the Elgin High School pool at a cost of about $2.5 million and a dehumidifier, pump and filter is to be installed at South Elgin for about $1.4 million, Deputy Superintendent of Operations Ann Williams said.
For the first time this decade, District U-46 will be offering swimming classes at all five high schools for students in grades 9 through 12.
Launching the course will cost about $75,300, with more than $55,000 of that expense earmarked for the purchase of life vests, kickboards, swim fins, water weights, water polo goals and water basketball hoops, documents said. The remaining cost is for teacher training and development.
New citizens recognized Tuesday at 24th annual Elgin ceremony
The city of Elgin’s 24th annual New Citizen Recognition Ceremony welcomed people from more than a dozen nations who recently completed the naturalization process.
Held Tuesday, June 25, in the The Centre of Elgin’s Heritage Ballroom, the new citizens were congratulated on their achievement by Mayor Dave Kaptain, members of the Elgin City Council and local state representatives and senators, according to a news release. Judge Julio Cesar Valdez Espinosa served as master of ceremonies.
Each new citizen received a certificate, a flag lapel pin and a small American flag.
Since its inception, the program has recognized new citizens from more than two dozen countries. Honorees this year hailed from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Laos, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Scotland and Venezuela.
Geneva Community Chest holding annual Donut Dash 5K in July
The Geneva Community Chest’s annual Donut Dash 5K is set for Saturday, July 20, so-called because participants enjoy doughnuts at the finish line and the money raised distributed to 29 charities throughout the Fox Valley.
Sponsored by the State Bank of Geneva, the race allows participants to walk or run. There also will be a one-mile run for children ages 6 to 14 and a Munchkin Fun Run for children 5 years old and younger, according to an event news release.
The ChronoTrack chip-timed, USA Track and Field-certified 5K run/walk will start at 7:30 a.m. at the Peg Bond Center, 151 Island Ave., in downtown Batavia. The one-mile competitive ChronoTrack-timed race will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by the Munchkin Fun Run at 8:45 a.m.
The top three male and female finishers in all age groups will receive medals, organizers said. Awards also will be presented for best female and best male costumes and for the largest team.

State Rep. Moeller to hold July 8 coffee event for local constituents
State Rep. Anna Moeller, D-Elgin, will hold her next constituents coffee event to discuss the just-ended legislative session and other state and local issues from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, July 8, at the Blue Box Café at 176 E. Chicago St. in Elgin.
“The coffee stop shop will give Rep. Moeller a chance to discuss the new state budget taking effect July 1, her legislation from this past session and other items of interest,” a news release on the event said.
She also will be gathering residents’ input on legislative priorities for the upcoming session, the release said.
