SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The new Diverging Diamond is up and running at the intersection of I-29 and 41st St. in Sioux Falls.

Seeing the orange traffic cones disappear from 41st St. has been a welcome site for some Sioux Falls drivers.

“I tried to avoid it for the longest time while they were doing construction, and now I’m glad that I can be back on it,” Ethan Wittler said.

Now, they get to use the first diverging diamond interchange in Sioux Falls.

“Oh, it’s great because it’s been such a bottleneck and a problem for a long time now. Traffic just flows great,” Don Storgaard said.

While some drivers like the new Diverging Diamond, others are worried about it being a little too confusing.

“I think it’s a great concept of kind of just controlling traffic and stuff. But I honestly think that the way they have it that the way people run red lights and just the horrible safety of drivers, it’s not going to be very good because I feel like there’s going to be a lot of accidents,” Wittler said.

But, it could get better once drivers fully understand how to use it.

“If people drive and obey the law the right way that they’re supposed to do then, I’m sure it’ll be a great thing for Sioux Falls, and it could definitely help with the 5 p.m. traffic and 6 p.m. traffic after people are getting off work,” Wittler said.

And it could become a popular intersection once again in Sioux Falls.

“I live not far from here, so I’ll be using it all the time,” Storgaard said.

Four more diverging diamond interchanges are either planned or under construction, including three in the Sioux Falls area.
