Dragon’s Dogma 2 looks awesome, right? The much anticipated action role-playing game about dragons and pawns came out swinging with a hefty new gameplay showcase on November 28, showing off the impressive character creator and some spectacular combat and officially revealing a March 24, 2024 release date. One thing that isn’t so awesome, however, is the game’s relatively high price tag of $70, which marks the first game from Capcom at this price.
As spotted by Eurogamer, Dragon’s Dogma 2 will run you $70 across PC (via Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. No other game by Capcom from this year or last has cost this much. Not even Resident Evil 4 Remake or Street Fighter 6, both of which were priced at $60. Capcom had been one of the few publishers still holding out at that level while others increasingly sell new games for $70, but with this news, it seems Capcom’s following suit now.

Spending $70 on Dragon’s Dogma 2 will just get you the base version of the game, though. If you wanted some extra goodies—like the Boon for Adventurers pack that includes gear, items, and other accouterments, as well as more unannounced preorder bonuses—you would need to shell out $80 for the Deluxe Edition. Gaming is evidently becoming more expensive as publishers push for $70 and $80 games, a divisive trend that’s raised a few eyebrows.
While Capcom may be the most recent publisher to announce a $70 game, it’s hardly the only company that’s decided to raise the prices of its games. Some Nintendo Switch games cost $70, a number of Sony games go for that much, Microsoft confirmed that its first-party games will all start running for $70, and Sega is considering raising the price of its games as well. And why not? As the CEO of GTA publisher Take-Two sees it, gamers seem fine with paying $70 for games, saying the company is seeing little to no pushback on the price increase.

So, yeah, Dragon’s Dogma 2 does look awesome. I’m stoked to slay more dragons and griffins and a bunch of other fantasy monsters in a fantasy setting. I’m not too thrilled about paying $70 to do so, but I guess that just means we’re truly and finally entering the era of $70 games, and that’s a huge bummer.
