Dr. Jennifer Sengin, Associate Director of Choral Activities, was awarded the 2021-2022 Georgia State University Instructional Effectiveness Award. Presented by the Office of Faculty Affairs, the purpose of the Instructional Effectiveness Award is to recognize an instructor who demonstrates a solid commitment to teaching and student success and to share at the university level outstanding approaches in instruction that are creative and effective in engaging students in the learning process.

“Dr. Sengin is one of the most engaged faculty members in the School of Music and is innovative and successful in all she does. Her teaching is a beacon of light and a model for each to see,” said Dr. Chester Phillips, Director of the School of Music. “She is an amazing colleague, artistic musician/conductor, skilled teacher, fervent recruiter, and dedicated Georgia State University faculty member.”

“I am so grateful for this recognition for a craft that I value so much. This award is a reflection of not only my work but of all of the people that I have studied with and learned from – their gifts, time, talents, and the way that they invested in my learning,” said Dr. Sengin. “Teaching is such a joy and something that I feel called to do. I hope to be able to offer the same for my students.”

Dr. Sengin conducts the Women’s Chorus (Treble Choir) and Choral Union and teaches graduate choral literature, graduate and undergraduate conducting, undergraduate choral methods, and supervises student teachers. Under her direction, the Georgia State University Women’s Chorus won first place in The American Prize Choral Performance category. Dr. Sengin also placed 2nd in The American Prize Dale Warland Award in Choral Conducting. The Women’s Chorus recently performed at the Georgia Music Educators Association Conference in January 2020. An active guest conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and presenter, Dr. Sengin has conducted honor choirs in Virginia, Georgia, Florida, New Jersey, Michigan, and New York, and presented sessions with the Dublin Youth Singers (Ireland), NAFME Eastern Division Conference, ACDA Central/North Central Division Conference, Georgia Music Educators Conference, Florida Music Educators Conference, and at the Virtual mirabai Women’s Leadership Retreat among others.
