MUNCIE, Ind. — A Muncie man was taken to jail after reportedly trying to bribe an officer with $700 at a traffic stop.
Thomas Eugene Rogers, 25, was charged with the following:
- Bribery, a Level 5 Felony
- Resisting Law Enforcement, a Class A Misdemeanor
- False Informing, a Class A Misdemeanor
- Possession of Marijuana, a Class A Misdemeanor
On Monday, July 22, around 11:55 a.m., officers spotted a gold SUV driving 52 mph in a 30 mph zone. The officer pulled the car over and immediately smelled marijuana. The officer asked the driver and passenger to exit the vehicle. The driver was cited for speeding.
According to court documents, the male passenger identified himself as Cayleb Riley to the police. Law enforcement ran the name and date of birth, but nothing returned during the search. The officer then decided to arrest him for providing false information, which he reportedly resisted. Eventually, the man gave his real name, and Rogers had two outstanding warrants.
While in the backseat of the vehicle, Rogers allegedly told the officer, “Please don’t take me to jail. I’ll do anything I can do. I’ll give you everything in my wallet. There is like $700 in there.” The officer spoke to him further and asked, “What did you say about all of this money?” Which Rogers responded, “You can have this whole wallet if you let me out.” The officer had his body camera on.
Rogers was transported to the Henry County Jail.
