Muncie, Ind. — A Muncie woman has been charged with neglect of a dependent for doing meth and heroin with a young child present.

According to an affidavit for probable cause released Friday, 33-year-old Gwyn Brown was arrested on Thursday. Police first became aware of her activity on Wednesday, when they responded to a separate incident in the 800 block of South Luick Avenue.

While handling the other situation, police observed drug paraphernalia both inside and outside the home where Brown was living. Law enforcement later learned a child lived in the home with Brown.

Per court documents, officials ultimately took custody of the child because there was paraphernalia in and around Brown’s residence. Once in DCS custody, the child had a presumptive positive test for fentanyl.

During their investigation, officers received a report that indicated Brown had done meth and heroin while the child was sitting on her lap. According to court documents, a tipster told police the juvenile likely had drugs in their system for that reason.

Law enforcement brought Brown in for questioning on Thursday. During her interview with police, Brown said she does both meth and heroin. She added that other adults come over to her home sometimes to do drugs.

Brown told investigators she always makes sure there is a sober adult with the child when she does drugs just in case she overdoses.

Brown’s bail amount has been set at $5,000. She was booked into the Delaware County Jail Thursday afternoon.

Neglect of a dependent is a Level 6 Felony in Indiana. The maximum penalty for a Level 6 Felony in the Hoosier State is a 2.5-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $10,000.
