I’ve been a teacher for 20 years and have met incredible educators dedicated to ensuring that students succeed. But many former colleagues have left the profession because of unaffordable health costs. Increasingly, I have considered doing the same.

As one of the many Nevadans with a chronic illness, I have frequently worried about affording my treatments. I’m not alone: The rising cost of prescription drugs is a top concern for Americans. As I approach retirement, I don’t want to worry about going bankrupt due to prescription costs.

Thankfully, Democrats in the Senate passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which lowers prescription drug costs by allowing Medicare to negotiate prices. Patients have been waiting for this for decades. It means a lot to know our leaders are looking out for us. Thank you, Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen, for helping to lower drug prices for teachers like me.
