JASPER COUNTY, Ind. – A person died following a police shooting that stemmed from a traffic stop in Jasper County.

According to Indiana State Police, a Jasper County sheriff’s deputy stopped a vehicle on State Road 14 east of County Road 475 East near the Pulaski County line around 4:15 p.m. on Sunday.

During the stop, the deputy attempted to arrest the suspect, who resisted. That led to what police described as an “altercation” between the deputy and the other person.

The incident led to the deputy to fire his weapon, killing the suspect, police said.

The suspect was in possession of a gun during the traffic stop, police said.

Indiana State Police are leading the investigation with assistance from the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office.
