SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A nonprofit that helps feed people in need just got a big donation from an egg farm near Flandreau.

Two pallets of eggs were rolled off a Dakota Layers truck and into Feeding South Dakota’s warehouse Tuesday morning.

It’s the ninth year in a row Dakota Layers has donated a dozen eggs for each free throw made by the SDSU men’s and women’s basketball teams during home games.

“This year there was 392 free throws made,” Dakota Layers Operations Manager Garrett Carr said.

But the donation didn’t stop there.

Dakota Layers added some bonus eggs, bringing the total donation to 900 dozen or 10,800 eggs.

The eggs will be available to families through Feeding South Dakota’s mobile food distributions and its partner agencies.

“Sometimes when families are making difficult decisions to stretch their dollar, they might not go for those high-cost items, and we all have been in the grocery store lately, eggs are a pretty expensive item at the moment, so they might make a concession there and buy something that’s less expensive,” Feeding South Dakota CEO Lori Dykstra said.

But more families will have eggs on the menu after Tuesday’s donation.

“It’s a positive type of thing and especially in a chaotic egg world right now,” Carr said.

Dakota Layers has donated millions of eggs to Feeding South Dakota since 2008, according to a press release.
