INDIANAPOLIS — Customs agents working at the Indianapolis International Airport intercepted four shipments of counterfeit Botox worth upwards of $8,500.
The shipments were intercepted at an Indianapolis express consignment facility and were listed as coming from Great Britain and Indonesia. The packages were marked “Marketing Product Samples” and “Cosmetic Preparations” and were headed to Michigan, New Jersey and California.
Inside the shipments were 14 glass Botox vials (100 units), 1 glass Botox vial (200 units), and 1 glass Dysport vial (500 units).
“These drugs can be expensive and hard to acquire in many locations, but cheap prices are not always the safest, especially when it comes to your health and well-being,” said LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke, director, field operations-Chicago Field Office
Botox, or botulinum toxin, is restricted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and cannot be imported into the U.S. without proper documentation.
“Unapproved products that you inject could seriously hurt you. They are manufactured in unregulated and unsanitary facilities with ingredients that you cannot be sure are authentic,” said Dennis Melvin, Indianapolis, acting port director.
