SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The weather pattern is about to turn wetter once again in KELOLAND, but does that mean more severe weather is coming our way?

Meteorologist Brian Karstens takes a closer look at the trends and what we need to watch in the coming days.

As we head into mid-June, it’s only natural to expect better chances of thunderstorms here across the plains. But will the storms bring just plain rain, or is bigger severe weather just around the corner?

The severe weather season as a whole for the country has been very busy for 2025.

The concentration of red, green, and blue dots on this map represent all the severe weather reports since January. Notice how much of KELOLAND is relatively low on the numbers…so far.

A zoomed-in map shows the higher reports across the far southeast, with hail and wind accounting for the damage so far.

Nationwide, 1100 tornadoes have touched down. As of right now, only 1 tornado has occurred in South Dakota. That dates back to a bizzare event in February near Watertown.

But those numbers are going to start changing. This map shows the the climatology of severe weather on June 10th. The highest concentration is to our south in Kansas.

Notice how those probabilities inch northward over the next 2 weeks.

That’s not surprising and right on cue, the extended forecast modeling shows the prospects of more heat and humidity moving our way. That’s one big ingredient that could help fuel those larger storms moving north.

We’ll be watching the placement of the first big waves of summer heat across the nation. Our severe threat will be linked to our ability to stay connected to rounds to cold fronts and the clashes of the air masses as we enter the second half of June.
