SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Feeding South Dakota hosted some very special guests today; cast members from the Broadway musical ‘Come From Away.’
They didn’t do any acting today, but they sure put on a memorable performance.
Actors and actresses from ‘Come From Away’ didn’t have to memorize any lines today, but they still had to follow a script.
“But everyone will line up assembly style, we will have people at the table putting items inside the bag,”
They, along with employees from the Washington Pavilion, volunteered to pack food items into bags for Feeding South Dakota’s backpack program.
“When we got the call that we were going to have some Broadway stars come and volunteer with us, who can’t say yes to that,” Feeding South Dakota’s Megan Kjose said.
For the cast members of ‘Come From Away’ this community service project hits close to home.
“Come From Away is a story like none other, it’s a 911 musical, but it’s more than that, it’s about ordinary people doing extraordinary things, 7,000 people had to emergency land in a town call Gander, Canada and overnight the town of Gander had taken in these people finding them shelter, food; much like we are doing here at the volunteer center,” Come From Away actress Addison Garner said.
Addison Garner plays one of the pilots who had to land her plane in Gander.
She says her Broadway role in ‘Come From Away’ really makes her appreciate doing something like this, because she knows it’s essential to making sure kids, who are less fortunate, get food to eat.
Last year Feeding South Dakota distributed over 161 thousand backpacks.
But they couldn’t do it without volunteers; even if they’re celebrities.
“It’s really nice to give back, you know we travel throughout the country and a lot of times we don’t get to spend too much time in individual communities, so when we have some free time during the day, it’s nice to be able to go out and explore but also to give back a little bit and help out with the community and help out at the food bank, feels nice to help people,” Come From Away actor Andrew Hendrick said.
KELOLAND News interviewed one of those pilots back in 2022, the one Addison Garner portrays in the musical.
